I played semi-professional baseball for one season in Italy. Before arriving I told the team that I could pitch as well as hit. I have never pitched before in my life. During the first practice, the head coach asked me to take the mound. I threw fifteen natural (overhand) pitches and the coach stopped and said in broken Italian/English, “that’s it?” To which I replied by nodding my head—no, of course not, I had a backup plan. I illustrated a sidearm delivery, which the coach seemed pleased to see. By the end of my pitching regimen, the coach asked if I had ever pitched before in my life and so concluded my first and last day of pitching in the great Italian Serie Division.
